Evaluation Question 1 – In what way does your media project use, develop and challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Teaser Trailer:
Firstly, like all real and professional films and trailers, we decided to start with a productions company logo. We decided to call our company “Bedazzled Productions” as this has connotations of jewellery, diamonds etc and generally things that sparkle and shine. We decided on having the three gold stars (as each star would represent one of the three women) with the words “Bedazzled Productions” (at a slanted diagonal angle) coming out of the stars to suggest to an audience that they are shooting stars on a black background. The words of the “Bedazzled Productions” would alternate between red and white, because from the start of this project, we as a group decided our colour code for this promotional package would be black, red, gold and white.
We chose these colours as:
• Red has connotations of love, passion, romance, danger and murder.
• Gold has connotations of wealth, fame, gold and glamour.
• White has the connotations of innocence, purity and women.
• Black has connotations of death, sex and seduction.
Through our mise – en scene e.g. Rose petals, lip stick, blood, jewellery etc and our trailer messages/ quotations e.g. “Revenge is sweet”, we made sure our colour code was referred to continuously. With the use of this colour code, we applied these colours to certain words. With words like “sweet” and “good” colour coded using white as this has a connotation of purity and good, on the other hand words like “revenge” and “bad” we put in red as this colour is associated with danger, murder and evil.
• Red : Lipstick, nail varnish, earrings, dresses, shoes, rose petals, rose, blood
• Gold: Jewellery, lighter
• White: Envelop of money, Tablet (spiking drink), bath tub, sink,
• Black: Glove, dresses, shoes, gun
Our choice of font was specific also, as it is bold, unique and the way the O’s look, it creates/ suggests an idea in the viewers/ audiences mind that these women have two sides to them; one devious, deceitful and dangerous and the other flirtatious, fancy and glamorous. So through the use and choice of our colour code and font it gives our promotional package a unique selling point as no other company has this colour code or font and uses it like we do.
In our trailer we decided to mainly use different variations of close up shots (medium close up, close up, big close up, extreme close up) as our group didn’t want to give too much information about the characters away to our audience. We filmed these shots to only give away certain characteristics e.g. skin colour, hair colour etc and certain pieces of information like wealth and their role as a character in this film.
By using shots that only give away certain pieces of information, this leaves the audience wondering/ thinking about different scenarios that could be going on within the trailer, what different reasons there could be for why a character does something and generally create questions about characters and what is going on in the trailer whether it is to do with their role as the character, their background etc. Examples of these shots that raise questions in an audiences mind are; the over the shoulder shot of Holly from behind at the bar, the shot of the wine glass being spiked and the final shot of the blood dripping into the sink and the characters bloody hand grasping the edge of the sink before collapsing to the floor. All of these examples cause the audience to wonder why these things are happening in the scene and what is going to happen after it. These questions can play a vital part in how popular a film could be as they can cause people to go and watch the full film after seeing the trailer, as they want to find out all the answers to the questions brought up in their mind from initially watching the trailer.
The Low angle shot of Holly at the bar, starts with a very smooth slow tilt up starts to slowly introduce Holly’s character to the scene/ shot but also the trailer. This immediately causes the audience to wonder who she is and how she fits into the film. Also by having the shot from a lower angle, it shows her character as being powerful and important to the shot and potentially the film. One shot that I felt certainly contrasted the forms and conventions of many professional teaser trailers is the hand held high angled shot in the bathroom of the blood dripping into the sink and the male character collapsing to the ground. By using the camera in a hand held position from a high angle, it makes it feel for life like for the audience as if they are the character collapsing and makes them feel as if they are involved in what is going on.
We usually kept the lighting for our project as ambient because we wanted to make it as realistic as possible, however for certain scenes we decided to change things for various reasons. The bedroom scene between me and Joy, we decided to use low key lighting to try to emphasise the seductive and sexual powers of the female character in this scene. Also we decided to have Joy’s character standing unlike the male character as this would show her character in a position of power and show that she is the one controlling the situation. In an earlier scene however (the jewellery/ring scene where a female pair of hands is trying on a big diamond ring) we decided to have high key lighting, firstly to emphasise and show the characters wealth and influential power, and secondly to show the sparkle and shine from the ring. By showing this it would immediately remind the audience of the production company name “Bedazzled” because of the association with expensive / precious things that sparkle and shine.
When we started editing we followed the forms and conventions of all professional teaser trailers i.e. continuity editing, cut, fade up and out. However, our project then started to challenge these forms and conventions as we decided that all of our trailer should be in slow motion, which isn’t common in most trailers of this genre. The purpose of doing this is that it makes what these women are doing (i.e. murder, theft, seduction etc) seem glamorous and from and audiences point of view, even though they can see what is slowly happening before their eyes, there is nothing anyone can do to stop it which emphasises the theme of helplessness and insecurity even more.
When looking at the forms and conventions of sound, our project doesn’t follow any of them only challenges them. As a group we decided not to have any diegetic sound in our trailer, as we wanted our own music track to be the only sound and to control the pace at which the audience would watch the trailer. We also wanted our track to try to glamorise the women vindictive and devious behaviour even more. The main reason we had to create our own piece of music and were unable to use a normal song was due to copy right issues. We agreed that the music should be soft and start off at a slow pace to show the characters as innocent and harmless when the audience is initially introduced to them. Then as the trailer progresses and more violence and danger is shown the music quickens and gets louder to try to raise suspense, tension and keep the audience engaged.
When choosing appropriate mise – en – scene our project used/followed the same conventions as most professional teaser trailer. The uses of props like money, jewellery and weaponry all show and give the female characters a sense of power, which constantly remind the audience that even though these women may look and seem harmless and innocent, really they are dangerous, murderous and deceitful.
Film Poster:
Our film poster follows the majority of the conventions of a professional film poster for various reasons. These reasons are:
• It has its own general colour code of red, white, gold and black
• It also has a bold, eye catching title that follows the colour code, contrasts the background and is the main focus (apart from the image) of the poster
• It has one main image that is dominant of everything on the poster
• It has the directors names and production company logo clearly shown on it
However, it challenges certain forms and conventions as it has no actor’s names on it because since none of our characters can be clearly seen in our trailer, we didn’t want to put actor’s names on as it may give the identity of certain characters, which could spoil the trailer for the audience.
Magazine Front Cover:
Our magazine front cover follows the majority of the conventions of a professional magazine front cover for various reasons. These reasons are:
• It has an eye catching title of the word “screen” in dark capital letters on a royal blue background; this challenges the forms and conventions of most magazine front covers as they usually have a brighter title on a darker background.
• It uses lots of persuasive language i.e. “EXCLUSIVE”, “new, unique phenomenon” etc
• It has promotional features like directors names etc I.e. “award winning director and producer; George Regan and Joy Isong”
• It has one predominant image, which shows Holly in a relaxed, calm pose smoking a cigarette, but still has a threatening sense about her as she holds a gun in her other hand.
• It correctly represents the genre of the movie and appeals to the right audience, as the films “dead man running, harry brown and kick ass” under the reviews on recent best seller films all are based around the crime genre and also all include a sense of violence, intimidation and deception.
• It has a quotation from the film or about the film from a newspaper or film critic e.g. “an example of why messing with the wrong women is a BIG mistake”.
Overall:
Gender stereotypes are the one thing that seems to challenge the forms and conventions the whole promotional package. In most professional promotional packages for this genre women aren’t the main characters, part of criminal organisations or are murders. Usually women in films of this genre are the victims, however for our project we decided to have men as the victims and have them in a position of danger, insecurity and inferiority. We as a group chose to do this for various reasons; one of these was that because no other film has done something like this, this scenario becomes one of our unique selling points. Also because for once women are the main characters and are in a position of power over men we felt this would appeal to a wider audience, as we knew the type of genre it was would appeal to men but we needed something to attract the females attention hence why they are the main characters.
Another thing we thought was a good idea was to have the three female characters coming from 3 different races. We got this idea from our some audience feedback we had gathered and from our research into the genre after looking at Charlie’s Angels. The purpose of these characters coming from different races is to make it a little harder for the audience to establish a connection between the three women and also to pinpoint who is the murderer in the film. Also by having them from different races it contrasts how they would look in different clothing, make up etc and also how they would blend and fit into different surroundings. A final reason for this is that characters from different races and ethnic backgrounds appeals to an even wider audience.

Evaluation question 2 – How effective is the combination of your main project and ancillary texts?

We as a group purposefully shot what appears to be a random shots and mixed them all up in our trailer to make it hard for the audience to figure out the narrative. We wanted to hint at the fact that there was something wrong and mysterious going on to do with these three women, without giving to much information away. By not revealing the majority of the information and characteristics of our characters, it forces our audience to concentrate more when watching the trailer, whilst try to figure out what and why these women have to do with the storyline and what is going on within the story. From watching our trailer an audience can gather that it is the women who are the main character, are the predators in the film and that men are their helpless and oblivious victims.
From the poster an audience can gather that the female characters are the dangerous and murderous character in the film, however they still are unable to fully see and identify the majority of the characteristics from the image, due to the choice of pose as it slightly hides Holly’s face yet still shows her in a powerful and dominant pose. An audience can gather the same information about the plot and characters from the magazine front cover as they can from the film poster; however you can see a bit more of the characters facial characteristic. The quotation “an example of why messing with the wrong women is a BIG mistake” confirms and audience’s ideas and theories about the female characters as being murderous and dangerous. The fact that you can’t gather much more information from the film poster or magazine front cover is a good thing because it will force an audience to either go and watch the film or to by the magazine to find out more about the film and find out the true storyline.

Evaluation question 3 – What have you learned from your audience feedback? and video of audeince feedack after watching teaser trailer final version

Audience feedback has played a big and important part in helping our group to make the best and most accurate promotional package for our target audience. The first piece of audience feedback we received was from a Sociology class of sixth formers, aged 17 – 19 (the target audience age group for this type of genre) on our ideas for a film teaser trailer. All the students agreed that the film idea we pitched them was quite a good idea, however compared to the second idea we pitched them, the first lacked quite a lot of detail and they thought that as a group we seemed less interested and enthusiastic about the idea. This helped us as a group a lot as it immediately out lined that something was wrong and we to change our idea (which we did) otherwise we would have been stuck creating something we had no passion or enthusiasm for.
We then received a great bit of audience feedback on our other two new teaser trailer ideas. After pitching our second idea to a group of sixth formers in the common room, they all agreed that they really liked the idea and would go and watch it in the cinema, as the genre type applied to all of them (both men and women) and that the change of convention of the criminal as being women instead of men was a good change. They also thought that the women characters should be from different races and ethnic backgrounds to show how it applies and appeals to a wider audience.
For our third idea we asked a fellow media group to view and assess our idea. They agreed that it was too similar to films like the Godfather 1-3 and Goodfellars and even though it wasn’t a bad idea, they thought it would be impossible for our film idea to hit the high expectations set by the Godfather and Goodfellars.
All the audience feedback we had received was very helpful as it helped us as a group clearly see what idea was the best for us to go with. After going through all the planning stages looking at various trailers of films, posters and magazine front covers within our genre and major production company, we finally had completed our teaser trailer and showed it to a fellow year 13 sixth form student who agreed to tell us what she thought of it. We then asked her the following questions while we filmed her:
• Can you identify the genre?
• Does this film appeal to you as the target audience?
• What does appeal?
• What doesn’t appeal?
• It’s a teaser trailer and is designed not to give too much information away. What information did you get from the trailer?
• Does the trailer leave you wanting to find out more about the film?
This audience feedback was extremely helpful to us as it showed us we had successful produced a good project that appealed to its target audience, kept them interested and involved but also didn’t give too much information away.

Evaluation question 4 – how did you use media technologies in the planning, research, construction and evaluation.

Planning and Research
• We used Google to research films and teasers trailers of those films.
• We then used Microsoft PowerPoint to create a PowerPoint containing information about two films of our own choice. I chose to look at Night at the Museum and X Mens Origins: Wolverine.
• We then uploaded this to slide share and were given a web link
• We created an account on blogger.com to store and view all our completed work for the project. We then took the web link from slide share and created a PowerPoint post on our blog
• Once we had chosen a specific genre to follow and had a good idea we wanted to use, we used Google and IMBD.com to research similar films within our selected genre. For our group those films were Charlie’s Angels, Chicago, The Sopranos and The Real Hustle.
• Once we had our idea fully completed we created a storyboard out of post it notes. We then filmed each post it note using a cannon video camera in the order that the trailer would go.
• Once we had filmed the post it notes we then uploaded this video of our animatics on to our blog
• After uploading this we then created a proper storyboard of how our trailer would go and a shooting script of when we would film each shot and what we would need etc
• Using a digital camera we took a picture of both our storyboard and shooting script. We then uploaded this to our blog.
Construction
• Using the cannon video camera and tripod we went and filmed all our shots
• We then uploaded all our video footage on to Ulead Editing Software, where we used various editing tools and effects to cut, fade, dissolve and slow down shots to create our film
• Since our group decided we didn’t want any diegetic sound, just a music track we had to use a music creating software to create our own piece of music
• Once we created it we then had to uploaded it on to Ulead and put it on our trailer
• We also decided we wanted to create our own promotions company logo; this had to be done on Photoshop. We filled the background in black using the paint bucket tool; we then used the shape tool to make three stars and then filled the stars in with a gold background. Then using the text tool we printed the words “Bedazzled Productions” on to the page and used the rotation tool to rotate the words at a diagonal slant. We then filled the letters using the paint bucket tool again alternatively with the colours red and white. Finally we used the shadow tool to make the stars look 3D
• For our film poster and magazine front cover, we used a digital camera and spot lights to create a photo shoot where we would use the photos as the images for our film poster and magazine front cover.
• We then took the two images we wanted to use (one for each promotional piece); we put them of face book and used the magic wand tool to remove the back ground and any other unwanted pieces of the picture. We then used the eraser tool to tidy any bits up that needed tidying.
• For the film poster we used the paint bucked tool to add a greyish black background to the poster. We then used the text tool to add the title, release date, director and producer’s names and website. We finally then imported our promotions company logo in.
• For the magazine front cover we used the paint bucked tool to add a blue background to the front cover. We then used the text tool to add the title of the magazine, film title, director and producer’s names and sell lines.
Evaluation
• For our evaluation we used our blogs to store all our posts, images, videos and PowerPoint files.
• We used slide share to upload our PowerPoint flies to enable them to be able to be uploaded to blogger.com
• We also used a digital camera to take pictures of our shooting script, photo shoot and location shots and story board which we then uploaded to our blog
• We used the cannon video cameras to film out post it notes which we then uploaded to our blog
• We used blooger.com to upload our film poser and magazine front cover

Magazine Front Cover

Film Poster

Preparation work before planning and creating our own teaser trailer ideas

Develpment of your film poster and magazine with use of photography and photoshop

We as a group decided not to use still from our trailer as images for the film poster and magazine front cover, so were put together a photo shoot using a high quality digital camera and spot lights. We ask Holly (from the other media group to be our model for the shoot as she was one of the characters in the film). We took many shots with Holly in many different poses, but wanted our audience to be able to see Holly’s characteristics but not too much. We also decided we wanted Holly to be holding a gun in every photo to take away any ideas or connotations that women are dangerous and are inferior when it comes to intimidation and threatening behaviour.
For our film poster we chose to use this photo, as it shows Holly’s character as being in a powerful position. It is also a good action shot because even though you can’t see who she is aiming the gun at, you can tell from the expression on her face and her body language that she isn’t messing around and means business. After deciding on using this image we then had to upload it to Photoshop in order to remove the background and tidy up the edges of the image. We did this by using the magic eraser tool as both joy and I found this the easiest tool to use, as we didn’t have much experience using this programme.

We decided on a different image for the magazine front cover, as we thought this image was still intimidating and threatening, but also shows Holly as being relaxed, calm, cool and in control. By having her in this pose it also gives off an attitude to the audience that murder, theft, intimidation and deceit don’t seem to have any effect on her conscience and therefore portray her character as strong and forceful. We also used Photoshop to remove the background and tidy up the image, however due to the fact we had our photo shoot inside a building, the character’s cigarette in her mouth isn’t lit. Our group though wanted the image to have a smoke effect coming out of the cigarette, however since we didn’t have that effect at our disposal we had to take a picture of a lit cigarette and import that into Photoshop. Once we did that we used the magic wand tool to remove the background in and around the smoke and then copy and pasted it on to the image of Holly with the cigarette.

Forms and conventions of a magazine front cover and how we as a group will use them

As we started on the second part of our project, our group started to look at and research different magazine front covers from one major production magazine companies like Empire, Total Film etc and one from a less nationally publicised magazine like Little White Lies, Sight and Sound etc. we chose to look at Empire and Little White Lies and started to analyse two magazine they produced to give us an example for our own project to follow.

Forms and conventions:
• Masthead, strap lines, reversed out cover lines, issue date and number, splashes, freebies, a main sell, a barcode and price.
• Eye catching title, (and depending on the genre) bright, colorful, bold, stands out from the background
• Persuasive language – through reviews or taglines etc to make people want to see the movie
• Promotional features like actors’ name, director, reviews etc
• Possibly use the rule of thirds as a format
• Usually one predominant image
• Important to correctly represent the genre of the movie to attract the right audience
• A quotation from the film or about the film from newspapers or critics who’ve reviewed it
How will we use these?
We as a group plan to:
• We plan to call our magazine “Screen”
• We plan to make our background colour blue as it as is a strong colour and have our title colour as black as most magazine usually have a darker background and brighter title, but we wanted to challenge these conventions
• Include a quotation as an overview of the film/ trailer
• Include other reviews included inside/ within the magazine
• We want our image to also be threatening and intimidating yet relaxed and different from the image we want to use for our film poster

Forms and conventions of a film poster and how we as a group will use them

As we started on the second part of our project, our group started to look at and research different film posters of similar films within our chosen genre. We chose to look at film posters of the films that were within our genre; Charlie’s Angels, Chicago and The Sopranos.
Forms and conventions:
• General colour code throughout the poster
• Strong background colour associated with that colour code
• Bold title usually in a colour contrasting the background colour, yet still keeping to the colour code
• One main image (usually)
• Main actors names on the poster; the position on the poster of these names changes from poster to poster for various reasons
• Production company, director, producer etc usually in a small bulk of text at the bottom of the page
• A quotation from the film or about the film from newspapers or critics who’ve reviewed it (sometimes)
How will we use these?
We as a group plan to:
• Create our own company logo to incorporate in our poster and trailer
• We decided on a colour code of red, black, white and gold for various reason
• For our title we want a specific font ( ) as through certain letters it creates certain connotations and images in the audiences mind
• We decided to include our names in the poster but didn’t give them any specific roll within the film
• The image we want as our main image is going to be one that is quite intimidating and threatening yet still doesn’t completely let you see everything about the character.

During the editing process

In order to edit our work, we first had to upload all the shots we had filmed on to the laptop provided for us. Once we did this, we then used the cutting tool to delete footage that either went wrong or we decided not to use. We also used this tool to clean up and also break up and separate shots. After all the shots were cut down and placed in order, we called a group meeting to discuss what we felt about how the film looked and what could be done to improve our project.
We as a group decided (with the help from some constructive criticism from our fellow media group) that out trailer was too long and that some of our shots were wasteful and didn’t have much of an impact on our audience/ film or apply to our film. After discussing alternative shots we could do/ use, we went out and spent time filming shots that we felt would be more beneficial to our project and would have more of an impact on our project and therefore would cause our trailer to appeal more to our audience.
We uploaded, cut our shots down and viewed our final sequence. We then decided through some audience feedback from Chris Ogori that we should add a slow motion effect to the majority of our shots to help build tension, suspense and to set a mood of seduction, sophistication and deceit for our target audience.
We as a group decided that our teaser trailer would only have background music for sound to back up those suggested themes of seduction, sophistication and deceit. However, since we were unable to take any normal song/ piece of music due to copy right issues, we had to create our own piece of music. We agreed that the music should be soft and start off at a slow pace to show the characters as innocent and harmless when the audience is initially introduced to them. Then as the trailer progresses and more violence and danger is shown the music quickens and gets louder to try to raise suspense, tension and keep the audience engaged.
As editing can physically only be done by one person, whilst one member of our group would do the editing, the other two started on the second part of our project by starting to research and design possible front covers for our magazine and film posters of our film.

Shot List Part 2

Shot List Part 1

Preparation work before filming - shot list and location decisions

After creating our post it notes shot sequence and our storyboard, we then had to make a shot list to decide where and when each shot would take place, who and what shots would be in and needed for each shot and the equipment that would be needed for each shot.

After we created our shot list, we then had to decide on and compare different possibilities available to us for certain shots. One scene that needed us to spend quite a bit of time on deciding the location was our bar/ club scene shot.

Our group had many different ideas and opinions on this subject, because as a group we felt this scene would give a lot away to the audience about our characters and also could be a main part of the trailer that could be the deciding factor for our audience for to whether they should or would want to come and see our film.

Post it notes shot sequence

Planning before Filming - Storyboarding

In preparation for our filming, we used postet notes to draw on to create our scenes for our trailer. Each postet note had an individual drawing of what the scene would contain and by putting them all together in a line it created a storyboard. By using postet notes we were able to move each scene around and experiment with how the sequence could go depending on our individual ideas for shots. This benefitted us greatly us in the long run, it saved us a lot of time and enabled our project to be more accurate, fulfilling, interesting and realistic

After this, we took still shots using a digital camera of each postlet note so that we could upload them onto this blog.

We then transferred our final idea for the sequence of shots onto a neater storyboard that we could use when we start our filming. This will keep us organised and on the right track.

Overview of the Real Hustle Trailer

• Clothing and constant references to business, deals and huge amounts of money e.g. £500,000, show these characters to be very intelligent, wealthy and successful
• Choice of music shows it to be a very serious deal and raises the suspense for an audience
• The change of music suggests the characters must act quickly and that time could be running out
• Champagne (as a prop) and the negotiation of the deal create a theme of success.
• The set up of a hidden camera suggest something is out of the ordinary and that these characters may not be worthy of peoples trust
• Apart from the hidden camera there is nothing else in the trailer to suggest something dodgy is going on or that a scam may be taking place.

Overview of Chicago Trailer

• Strong voice over
• The choice of clothing and music, show the time this film is set in as both are quite old fashioned
• The dancing shows a strong theme of the arts is used/ referred to in this film. However, through the type of dancing, on stage costumes and make up it suggests themes of sex, seduction, temptation and (through the presents of the police showing up in the club, possibly) corruption.
• The scene of a female character holding a gun and then the same character firing what appears to be a different gun, suggests themes of murder and revenge, as that industry is “dog eat dog” and people using one another for their own personal gain is common
• Certain terminology (e.g. liquor) show us as an audience that this film is set in America
• The difference between the two main characters (Velma and Roxie) e.g. hair style colour, complexion and costume and make up on and off stage and also the connection of wanting the centre spot light and attention of the public on and off stage also raises theme of competition and rivalry as the business is “dog eat dog”.

Overview of the Sopranos Trailer

• Choice of background song “Woke up this morning” by Alabama 3 – shows the theme of action and crime as the song has constant references to guns and murder. Also the choice of this band shows us as an audience that this film is set in America.
• The quotations from the Mafia trilogy The Godfather, by one of the characters and his choice of clothing of a designer (probably Italian) suit – raises and suggests ideas of links to the Mafia.
• These ideas are backed up as one of the characters refers to himself as the “boss” and also the respect shown to this character by everyone, especially at public events like funerals and weddings
• The constant use of guns used to threaten/ intimidate and murder people show and back up the suggested themes of action and crime
• The final song (in the trailer) sung in Italian by the character referred to as the “boss”, shows these people/ this family is from an Italian background and therefore suggests further links to the Mafia

Overview of Charlie’s Angels Trailer

• Random beginning with two characters on a plane
• The theme of action is immediately shown as an African male kidnaps one of the passengers on the plane and jumps out of the plane
• A voice over starts – smooth, calm voice
• A Female sky dives out of a helicopter and starts to interfere with the kidnapped victim’s jacket
• An explosive goes off – another reference to action
• The female lands on a speed boat (captained by another woman) with the victim, shortly followed by the African man – showing some sort of connection between them all
• African man removes his costume to reveal he is really a Caucasian woman
• Voice over is done by the narrator “Charlie” – girls boss
• “Charlie” is the main connection between the women
• Explosives, martial arts, car crashes, weaponry and violence all show and support the themes of action. Mise – en – scene like these plus the use of specialised technology, show and raise the theme of the secret service and show these women to be spies of some sort and “Charlie” as their boss
• The three female characters are shown to be quite seductive and sexy – this is shown through certain dialogue and costume choice e.g. tight spandex/ leather clothing and scenes of Cameron Diaz in small hot pants and a tight t- shirt showing off her figure and seductiveness.

Research into the genre of our chosen idea

We as a group decided that our second idea was the best to go with, as we as a group were far more enthusiastic, interested and motivated, if we wanted to make a good teaser trailer, film poster and magazine front cover.

Its genre follows the crime, drama, thriller and romance (hybrid) categories. Films that followed this genre were:
• The Sopranos
• Chicago
• The Real Hustle
• Charley’s angels

Which films will influence your own project?
• The Sopranos
• Chicago
• The Real Hustle
• Charley’s angels

Explain how they will influence your project.
We are using the women as the main characters, as when thinking or hearing about a crime, drama, thriller and romance (hybrid) you don’t usually picture a woman/ women as being the ones committing the crime.
Also like in Chicago, The Real Hustle and Charley’s angels the women would be using their sexiness and powers of seduction to attract their victims.
The use of the bar scene between our female character and one of her victims, was an idea we got from watching The Real Hustle and just from the general attitude and actions in shown in many other films, of a man buying a woman many drinks whilst trying desperately to win her over with small talk and jokes.

What common themes do these films have?
The Sopranos and The Real Hustle both contain the themes of organised crime, victimising people and women (wives of the mafia members/ female scammer) benefiting off of the victimisation of those people.
Charley’s angels and Chicago both contain the theme of feminism due to the main characters being women.

How do these films create narrative "enigmas" for the audience?
All of these films leave the audience with thinking;
• Who are these people?
• How they all are connected (whether it’s through an organisation, work, family etc)?
• What is their role in what is happening in the film?
• How does the climax or a big situation in the film affect these characters?
• How are they benefiting from committing / preventing these crimes?

How do they appeal to their audiences?
• Doesn’t give too much information away, but teases its audience with the information it does give away. This therefore causes them to feel that they must see it in order to find out more
• Filled with action, trickery and deception, therefore keeping their audience interested and since the target audience is late teens to mid 20’s, these type of films appeal greatly to them

Audience feedback of ideas

Our first idea - the horror/ comedy (hybrid), similar to films like Scary movie 1 -4, Scream, Epic movie; received useful audience feedback from a sixth form Sociology class, aged 17 – 19 (the target audience age group for this type of genre). All the students agreed that the film idea itself was quite a good idea, however compared to the second idea we pitched them, the first lacked quite a lot of detail and they thought that as a group we seemed less interested and enthusiastic about the idea. We then decided a group meeting needed to be called and after discussing our feeling about the idea, we realised that our audience feedback was right and that either an improvement of the idea or a new idea needed to take place. After brainstorming for a couple of hours as a group, we came up with a new idea that we we’re enthusiastic and happy to continue with and would overall succeed more in making our teaser trailer.

Our second idea - the crime, drama, thriller and romance (hybrid), similar to films and television programmes like The Sopranos, Chicago, The Real Hustle and Charley’s angels. For this idea we asked a group of sixth formers (as they would be the target audience for this film) in the common room to hear our idea and give us their views on it and how it could be improved. They all agreed that they really liked the idea and would go and watch it in the cinema, as the genre type applied to all of them (both men and women) and that the change of convention of the criminal as being women instead of men was a good change. They also thought that the women characters should be from different races and ethnic backgrounds to show how it applies and appeals to a wider audience.

Our third idea was also along the genre of crime. We decided on a gangster based film that would have been set in 1960’s America similar to such films like The Godfather 1-3 and Goodfellars. After asking a fellow media group to view and assess our idea, they agreed that it was too similar to films like the Godfather 1-3 and Goodfellars and even though it wasn’t a bad idea, they thought it would be impossible for our film idea to hit the high expectations set by the Godfather and Goodfellars.

Film and Teaser Trailer Ideas

We found coming up with ideas quite hard. However, after discussing what each of us would like our films to contain we managed to come up with the two ideas.
> Our first idea was a horror/ comedy (hybrid), similar to films like Scary movie 1 -4, Scream, Epic movie. However, after getting some audience feedback from a Sociology class of sixth formers, aged 17 – 19 (the target audience age group for this type of genre).
> Our second idea is a crime, drama, thriller and romance hybrid, similar to films and television programmes like The Sopranos, Chicago, The Real Hustle and Charley’s angels. It would have been made by a major production, so we will be following the conventions of film that would have been made be companies like Universal, Paramount etc. This film is going to be aimed at a working class audience made up of both males and females, all races, ethnicities, religions and sexualities. The age range is going to be 15 -30 and will be aimed at the demographic groups C2 (skilled manual workers, plumbers, builders – blue collar), D (semi – skilled and unskilled manual workers) and E (unemployed, students, pensioners, casual workers) and the psychographic groups of Aspirers, Strugglers and Explorers. The unique selling point (USP) for this film is that the criminals are all women and the hybrid of genres is a different and unusual combination.
Film Idea
Beginning:
• Three women, different husbands who all work for the same company and are cheating on their wives with 3 different women
• The wives each find out by……
> Maria sees Jennifer’s husband kissing another women in a bar
> Kelly sees a text on her husbands phone from Jennifer’s husband about a woman he has on the side
> Jennifer sees Kelly’s husband coming out of a hotel holding hands with another woman while she is driving home at night
(They tell each other about their husband’s antics)
• All three women divorce and humiliate their husbands through different ways i.e. taking all the money out of their joint bank account, destroying the things the men love such as their cars, art work etc or publicly humiliating them in front of the whole neighbourhood

Middle:
• The three women turn to a life of crime, working as a team and have a feminist view of men
• They start attracting men at bars, clubs etc. they sleep with them and then start thieving from them (stealing cars, wallets, jewellery etc) to humiliate them
End:
• Kelly starts to fall in love with one of the men (who is one of the targets)
• She tries to leave the team, but Maria and Jennifer protest and kill the guy she loves
• Kelly is heartbroken and gets revenge on them by turning to the police and informing them of all three women’s crimes
• All three women end up in jail, with Maria and Jennifer serving a life sentence for killing the loved mark

Trailer Idea
• Slow motion
• Very slow calm music, which builds in to stronger music as the trailer progresses
• Conflicting images
> A shot of something innocent e.g. lipstick / a glove
> Something dangerous and deadly e.g. a gun/ a dead body

Our third idea was also along the genre of crime. We decided on a gangster based film that would have been set in 1960’s America similar to such films like the Godfather 1-3 and Goodfellars. It would also have been made by a major production, so we will be following the conventions of film that would have been made be companies like Universal, Paramount etc. This film is going to be aimed at a mainly white male working class audience made up of all religions and sexualities. The age range is going to be 15 -50 and will be aimed at the demographic groups C2 (skilled manual workers, plumbers, builders – blue collar), D (semi – skilled and unskilled manual workers) and E (unemployed, students, pensioners, casual workers) and the psychographic groups of Aspirers, Strugglers and Explorers.
Film Idea
Beginning:
• Rival gangster families.
• The story follows the Morretti family and their everyday crime sprees such as extortion, robberies etc
• The Flauzino Family Start to grow as a mobster family and begin to make their name known
Middle:
• The Flauzino Family Start to move in on the Morretti family’s business and begin to cause blood between the two families to boil.
• As the Flauzino Family’s soldiers attempt to overtake the Morretti family’s bank robbery
• One of the Morretti family’s capo’s and 2 of their soldiers gets whacked and this causes a mob war
• The Morretti family attack and destroy the majority of the Flauzino Family’s business’

End:
• The Morretti Family decide that destroying their business’ isn’t enough pay back and decide to eliminate the Flauzino Family for good by blowing up their base and wiping out all Flauzino Family followers
• The police decide enough is enough and attempt to get involved to stop this mob war before anymore civilians get hurt
• As the Morretti Family prepare to make their move they get a tip off about the massive police bust and decide a change of plan is in order
• The Morretti Family use their contacts and strike a deal with the police
• They call on the Flauzino Family to attack their business’, where the police lay waiting to arrest them all and also take down the highest ranked people in their family

Trailer Idea
• Slow motion
• Partially set in black and white, flashing back and forth from colour to black and white
• Slow and calm old fashioned music
• Images showing the hierarchy in the mobster family, images of murder, extortion, robbery, respect etc

Research into genres

We as a group decided that because we would need at least two different film ideas, we would choose two completely different genres to follow so that there would be no chance the films could be similar in any way.
One genre we chose to follow was a horror/ comedy (hybrid). Films that followed this genre were:
• Scary movie 1 -4
• Scream
• Epic movie
Another genre we chose to follow was a crime, drama, thriller and romance (hybrid). Films that followed this genre were:
• The Sopranos
• Chicago
• The Real Hustle
• Charley’s angels
The final genre we chose to follow was crime. Films that followed this genre were:
• Godfather 1-3
• Goodfellars
• Donnie Brasco

A2 Coursework background information and details

Our A2 assignment this year is to create a teaser trailer, film poster and magazine front cover for our own film. Our group this year consisted of George Regan, Jordan Aloysius and Joy Isong. Before we could start making the trailer, poster or magazine front cover, we had to look into what genres we wanted to follow, research teaser trailers/ trailers, posters and magazine front covers of those genres and come up with two ideas for films and trailers, a poster and magazine front cover that we would want to make.
